The Country’s Easiest Fantasy Football Draft Sheet -A Fantasy Draft Sheet for Beginners.
From Seal Beach Willie

What you have to understand is that a fantasy draft is not rocket science!  This is a game for crying out loud so have some fun and don’t overestimate draft “knowledge.”  Its 50% luck and the other 50% is in the list at the bottom of this page!

A couple of guys in your league are going to draft 2 or 3 of the very best players in the NFL ….. and get nothing out of their pick. (Like the guys who drafted Tom Brady land Thomlison last year and Reggie Bush the year before) A couple of gals are going to draft some guy you never heard of cause they think he’s cute…and he’ll probably score 20 TD’s.

HERE’S HOW YOUR LEAGUE WILL WORK.
Let’s assume your league is 10 players.
Let’s assume you draft 3 QBs, 4 RBs, 4WR’s, 2 TEs, and 2 Ks. That’s 15 players total.
Let’s assume each week you are going to have to play: 1 QB, 2RBs, 2 WRs. 1TE and 1K.

HOW TO PICK

1-Most important thing to remember is each players  “bye” week. Not too important on  your first few picks but MAKE SURE you consider the Bye week by the time you have made  your first             5 picks.  Doesn’t make much difference until then.

The picks in the list below favor RB’s as early picks. So if your league doesn’t give points for yardage adjust your “Cheat Sheet” as follows:
2-move  the top five QBs up to the top 5 spots.
3-then leave the top 10 RBs in the next 10 spots
4-then move in another 4 QBs and 4 top WRs to spots 16 thru 24.
The list below also gives too much emphasis to WRs.  We can’t imagine taking a WR before taking the guy throwing the ball to him?
That’s a total of 23 top players.  No matter what number you had in the draft you now have at least two great players  1 great QB and 1 great RB (maybe a very good WR but I’d wait another turn for a WR unless somebody super is still available.) On the next round if you can get another top RB – but pick one on another team than your first RB is on. For your 4th pick – If you haven’t yet drafted a WR… there will be some great ones still available. If there is a REALLY good one that goes w/your QB take him  – – although it is doubtful that will happen because when someone drafts…say Tom Brady, somebody else is going to take Randy Moss before that guy gets to pick again.

5- Once you gotten a QB and 2 RBs…and the best WR out there you’ve gotten most of
your team on just four picks! Don’t worry about Ks or TEs until after you’ve  gotten
2QBs, 3RBs and 3WR’s.  Most kickers have pretty similar totals and when one kicker
is 20 pts behind another guy at the end of the season ..its not because he  couldn’t
kick…its because his QB couldn’t get him close enough.

6-OK you now have the guts of your “1st” team; a top QB,
2 good RBs and a great receiver. Your probably going to play
those 4 players every week you can.  Now look thru the rest
of the list while your waiting for your next chance and pick the
best player available. Hopefully another RB and WR.

REMEMBER THIS….YOU  ARE GOING TO WIN OR LOSE BASED ON FOUR GUYS ON YOUR TEAM!

IF A KEY PLAYER GETS HURT…GET RID OF HIM QUICKLY AND GET A REPLACEMENT.  IN FANTASY YOU WANT TO WIN GAMES AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.  DON’T WAIT AROUND FOR THE PLAYOFFS!

Remember to carry a copy of your cheat sheet with you in the days leading up to your draft.  When you hear that Beanie Wells hurt his ankle and got carried off the field…make a note next to his name..maybe an arrow pointing down so you know to downgrade him on draft night.  Is Plaxico Burress going to go to jail or is he going to be able to play this year?

The picks you see on our list are where they are based on how we expect them to do THIS year  but you can also look at how they did last year and see if that reminds you of anything.

And here’s an alphabetical list of kickers.  Most important thing for you is to MAKE SURE you don’t have the same bye week for your kickers!  Very Important. Gostkowski is probably
the best kicker on the list…but if Brady is hot he won’t be kicking so many field goals. Succop (at K.C.) and Feely (at Jets) may be bailing out their team of the new QBs fail to click.

A few minutes with Bob Hope

To those of  our youngsters growing up and not knowing who Bob Hope was and what  our country meant to him I’d like to tell you a little.

Although Hope was born in England he came to America and became a consummate Yankee.  Hope never wore his patriotism on his sleeve to get attention but his volunteer work for U.S. troops in harms way and his annual Christmas tours to dangerous war zones will never be forgotten by any who saw them.

Bob had the ability to gather the most glamourous stars of the day to travel with him. Such as: Raquel Welch, Betty Grable, Ursula Andress,  Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, Joe Di Maggio, Joe Namath, Jack Jones, and Don Rickles.

Bob had very definite political opinions but he never expressed them during these tours. He attacked Democrats and Republicans equally with his wit…because, after all,  half of  his audience belonged to each party.

To experience some of his humor here’s a little video from You Tube that we know you will enjoy.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBr9cm9EWJQ

Trans Pac update – weak winds at front of pack!

Comments Off on Trans Pac update – weak winds at front of pack!

The weather for the leading boats is a disappointing high. The big boats that left Saturday are taking a more southerly route to try to get more wind so they will probably have faster  starting days than those that left earlier in the week.

Not all the websites can be updated daily….after all there are some more important tasks to take care of….but we’ve included two below. Surprisingly Pegasus, with a small crew, is doing a pretty good job on their updates. Pegasus was making 14 knots last night in pretty big seas…much faster than most of the reports. They reported longitude 121.27 so there are several boats far in front and many behind….but if they can keep the 14 knots up they’ll soon be among the front runners in their class.

The 35 foot Relentless (Div 6) is still the overall leading boat. It is 1503 miles from Diamond Head at Latitude: N 23°56.336′ Longitude: W 130°47.99′ Last report 4:53 ago and it is considerabley south of other boats and getting better winds at present.

Close 2nd is 57’ Charisma, Division 7 leader 1520 miles from finish at Latitude: N 26°27.448′ Longitude: W 130°38.626′.

Cipango is 1660 miles from finish and is lead boat in Division 3 at Latitude: N 26°43.989′ and Longitude: W 128°3.387′.

A second Relentless, the 52’ Santa Cruz, and Bengal 7 are in a virtual tie leading Division 4, 1679 miles from Hawaii at Latitude: N 27°36.228′ Longitude: W 127°47.595′. Four hours since last report and they appear to be sailing in sight of each other. Great excitement for those crews.

Passion, a 50” Santa Cruz, leads Division 5 and is 1704 out at Lat N 26°25.667′ and Long W 127°12.642′ but all the class 4 and 5 boats are very closely grouped and undoubtedly leads will change in the coming days.

The big boats are still in relatively strong winds and far behind at this juncture, however, two of the race favorites, Alfa Romeo and Magnitude 80 are within 40 miles of each other and neither has reported in recently. (Could it be they don’t want to give each other any important information?)

Pegasus Last Report – July 6, 8:00 AM PST,

Course 219° T, Speed 14 Knots, Lat 31° 18′ N, Lon 121° 27′ W

“Mark and I split the night. I stood watch until 2 am, Mark took over until sunrise. We are both wet, cold, battered by waves, yet happy as can be: We sailed fast and smart.

At one in the morning we put up the big Genoa, cracked the sheets and stood on 14 to 16 knots. Fast in the night. We saw lights from racers ahead of us, then on our beam, then behind us, Then no more.

I saved a life last night. I was hit on the chest by a giant flying fish. I looked at it flapping in the dark amidst the fluorescent krill brought on by the large waves submerging the boat periodically. So, I made a dive for the fish on my way, hit the auto-pilot switch, grabbed the fish, felt a violent right turn, and I got washed to leeward by a wave. Bloodied nose, bruised knee. The pilot didn’t engage. But I saved the fish. I wasn’t going to eat it. It was a male so no Tobiko. Now this fish has quite a story to tell his fellow fish. Mark slept down bellow through all of this.

Pushing hard for the record after a wild, wet and exhausting night.”

Lynx’ Last Report – Day 6 July 4, 2009 (Written July 5th)

Kate’s Blog

“Today was another lazy day. The wind picked up for a little while this afternoon, but now (at 21:30) it has died again. It sounds like boats are starting to drop out of the race and turn on their engines so as not to run out of food before they reach Hawaii. I hope that it doesn’t come to that for us.

On a happier note… If I had to pick a theme for today I think it would be “just dance.” Holly told us a little story about a couple of boys that were out for a day-sail. They got into a disagreement, but the mom came over and said “don’t fight, just dance.” And they did! And we have as well, all day long. Holly, Christine, and I had a little dance party in the galley this afternoon (perhaps inspired by the sugar rush from the 4th of July cake…) and we’ve all been bouncing around ever since. I even heard that our First Mate, Sam, pranced down the deck earlier!

In addition to the cake, we shot off a canon in celebration of the 4th. It was a pretty awesome sound and sight to have a canon go off in the middle of a dead calm Pacific Ocean. Afterwards did some dancing to 1812 Overture (which, I think, is extra appropriate aboard Lynx.) Happy 4th of July everyone! We would also like to send out a Happy Birthday to Holly’s mom and my Aunt Renee.”

(ed.note) Lynx is an escort boat.

Comments Off on Crowley Lake Boat Inspection Warning

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has issued an alert for all boats entering Crowley Lake.  All boats will be thoroughly inspected to help prevent the spread of invasive mussels that can impact the fisher and damage boats and water systems. Boats showing signs of contamination with invasive mussels, or found to contain any water or debris that could harbor mussels will not be allowed to launch into Crowley Lake.  Boat inspections will be done at the Crowley Lake South Landing and in Bishop for the fishing season opening.

DON’T MOVE A MUSSEL! Help stop the spread of invasive mussels. Inspect boats and trailers thoroughly and remove any trash, mussels or aquatic weeds. Drain water from the motor, live-well, bilge and transom wells.  Wash boats, trailers and equipment with a pressurized power sprayer and hot water. Rinse live -wells, bilge and cooling systems with hot water.

Dry boats, motors, trailers and equipment in the hot sun for at least two weeks before using them again.  Look for mussels on your vehicle rear end, trailer hitch, rollers, anchor, dock lines, hull, axle, live wells, bilge and motor.

USC’s Mark Sanchez getting lots of NFL looks

Comments Off on USC’s Mark Sanchez getting lots of NFL looks

This week the NFL is meeting in at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort and getting a lot of criticism for staying at such a high priced venue during tough economic times.  This reporter says leave them alone.  If staying in plush digs puts the money men (read owners) to push through rule changes that will protect their gladiators from life crippling injuries I say let them stay at the St. Regis all summer.

Some of the rules adopted include:

  1. Initial force of a blindside block can’t be delivered by a helmet, a forearm or shoulder to an opponent’s head.    A blindside block will bring a 15-yard penalty. (Long overdue!)
  2. First contact to the head of a defenseless receiver also will draw a 15-yard penalty.
  3. No blocking wedge of more than two players on kickoffs.
  4. Kicking teams can’t have more than five players crowded together to capture an onside kick.

Rodney Harrison, New England Safety, has already come out and criticized the above changes as making the game too soft.  We have to remember that Rodney’s job is to deliver such hits…not receive them. Think that might change his mind?

Two weeks ago I met with an NFL running back, who didn’t want to be identified. He retired after 12 years in the league.  We were discussing the current economic crisis and someone at the table suggested that he didn’t have to worry because of the NFL’s generous retirement plan.  He laughed. “That money won’t be available to me for another 15 years and when it is I probably won’t be around to collect it?”   The next obvious question was “why not?”  “Check it out” he said. “Very few of us are still alive.  Those of you who refer to yourself as a ‘working stiff’  have a considerably longer lifespan than an NFL player.”

Rose Bowl MVP, USC’s Mark Sanchez  is expected to be a high draft pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Sanchez had an outstanding showing at the “Combine” earlier this year and is at home in Orange County waiting for the April NFL draft.  Rumors are flying about who is ‘courting” him. Pretty good sources said that his week he was visited by represeentatives of Denver,  Redskins, 49ers, Jets and Steelers.  Two of the group of prospective employers tested him on his ability to study the playbook and he passed with colors.

Several of his USC teammates also expected to be high draft picks including linebackers Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga. Both are on the Steelers charts as well as several other clubs.
